Blessed…And Not Seeing It…

Too Often We Do Not Realize Our Blessings

2015-01-27 08.26.22Just like we often fail to see the forest because of the trees, we also fail to see our blessings in the midst of a full life.

I was reminded of this earlier this morning while chatting with a friend in Texas about this picture I posted on several social media accounts.

Her comment:

I see pictures like this but I have never known anyone that actually lived there. Thanks for sharing. It ain’t Texas but, man, I have to admit we don’t have anything to compare here. You have the scenery, weather, everything!

“You have… everything….” Yet the reality of our situation is often no different than others who live in other areas. I still drive through beautiful parts of the world and say, “I could enjoy living here.” Scotland, Germany, Iceland, British Columbia, and yes, even parts of Israel. There are still many places left on my list of places I want to visit…

IMG_3064For over 16 years we lived in Alaska. For those 16 years we worked our jobs, kept our noses to the grindstone, and seldom ever lived the part of a “tourist”… The beauty of the state was all around us. We LIVED in a beautify place! But life was still a morass of living with the same ol’ problems we had everywhere else we lived.

It finally took us moving out of the state so we could be tourist going back to the state on a cruise! Best experience we’ve ever had in the United States.

So, as a reminder from a friend, I think about the blessings of life and hum this old song as I number them, one by one…

  1. When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed,
    When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
    Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
    And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.

    • Refrain:
      Count your blessings, name them one by one,
      Count your blessings, see what God has done!
      Count your blessings, name them one by one,
      *Count your many blessings, see what God has done.
      [*And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.]
  2. Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
    Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
    Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
    And you will keep singing as the days go by.
  3. When you look at others with their lands and gold,
    Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
    Count your many blessings—*money cannot buy [*wealth can never buy]
    Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.
  4. So, amid the conflict whether great or small,
    Do not be discouraged, God is over all;
    Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
    Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.

  1. This is an excellent reminder – we so often look at what others have, do, etc. and never fully appreciate what good we ourselves have. I find myself sometimes “wishing” but have to bring myself down to the facts that we are all healthy, have food and a warm place every day. We have all we need and in many ways most of the things we want. Thank you!

  2. So true.
    We are Blessed.
    Best part of traveling the world….
