Where In The World…

…is Justice?

Lady Justice Supreme CourtIs there such a thing as Justice? Definitions of this word says simply, “just behavior or treatment” and synonyms includes words like: “fairness, fair-play, impartiality”…

  • The concept of Justice goes back in time as far as one can search.
  • The need for Justice is as old as human experience.
  • The laws that Justice rules over are wildly different from generation, culture, or country.

Justice in one persons eyes is either harsh enough to feel vindicated, or lax enough to feel like Justice never prevails. There never seems to be a middle ground.

In some cultures, Justice prevails when the “eye for an eye” penalty is given and the victim can “do unto others as done unto me”. In others, there is no true payment for crime because the worst that happens is the death penalty that is years in the making, or a life behind bars.

The Lady Justice that stands before our national Supreme Court holds up the balance scales, blindfolded to show equality, and a sword in hand that can swing either right or left.

The image is one of equality, the concept speaks of equal justice, but the reality is – there is no true justice. The statue is in front of the US Supreme Court which decides the course of the nation based on laws it chooses to rule on. The concept of Justice by the highest court of the land is lauded, however, the court CHOOSES which appeals it will look at. It is not required to rule on every appeal.

This week, a man was convicted of manslaughter, a lessor crime than the the Murder One charge being sought. True, he killed a teen with a wildly fired bullet, but the proof was somewhat circumstantial so he ended up with a lessor charge. Along with his other crimes, he will spend 70+ years behind bars, but the “label” of his crime will not be as severe as the prosecutor and family wished for.

Last night, a young man was killed and the headlines this morning scream: “Family in shock after fatal shooting: ‘Justice must be served'”…

2015-03-31 17.49.43Indiana signed a version of a law supported by Presidents Clinton and Reagan, and signed into various forms by 30 states, but the culture of the country has changed enough that the law is cried to be foul – governments, businesses, and popular names step in to declare “no business” with the state until they match their laws to others.

They seek to control another’s right to judge according to the laws as passed by another entities legal right to create their own laws. What they fail to do is to approach the same fervor with the over 72 countries that are controlling their populous more vigorously than the state in question. Why? That’s a deep discussion.

Justice is sought and yearned for, but often never found to the satisfaction of the searcher.

Three Branches of GovernmentThere is one concept of law, justice and liberty that I have spoken of before. The structure of the US Government was founded upon scripture. We have three branches of government. The Legislative. Executive. Judicial.

These three are found in:

“For the LORD is our judge; the LORD is our lawgiver; the LORD is our king; he will save us.” (Isaiah 33:22 ESV)

Executive = King (of Old Testament terminology), Lawgiver = Legislative, Judge = Judicial

In other words, God writes the laws, he judges the results, and is the final rule over his creation.

Laws of man are never perfect. When we vote on direction for the nation, someone is always going to be on the wrong side of the new direction. You will never change the nations path with a signature. Never will you find full justice for the wrongs of this world as long as the laws and people we follow are imperfect.

There is a final voice. It is not you. It is not me. Courts, juries and people are split on varying sides of the situation. But someday…

“And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” (Revelation 20:11-15 KJV)
