Mother’s Day 2015

Today is Mother’s Day…

Brenda with KadenA traditional day that we obey principles that are etched in time. But the concept is truly revealed in the word of God. Just go read Proverbs 31!

This day has not always been a “holy day” but there is something special about spending time with our mom’s.

Some of you can look around and find your mom in this congregation. Some have already called her a great distance away and shared your respect and admiration. Yes. And your love.

Other’s have lost their mom’s to time, and maybe you have a special thought about those long ago experiences that you can teach to others by repeating what you learned the most.

My mom lost her mom in 1993… 22 years ago…

Around the world, it is not just Christians that are celebrating their mothers. Rather, where it is celebrated it matters little whether there be religion or not.

There is just something so blessed and special about mothers.

I love this scripture from Genesis where it describes Eve as the “mother of all living.”

“The man [Adam] called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.” (Genesis 3:20 ESV)

Her name is the Hebrew word “Chavvah” from which we speak her name. In the Strong’s, it is H2332. Not an early name in the dictionary, but 2,332 entries in we finally see her name in print.

What does it mean? Simply: Life-giver. Eve, as the mother of all living, does something only a mother can do. She gives life.

Think about the life that your mom gave to you, and to your way of life as long as she was with you, and then on into time as long as there is someone to remember her through you. To as many generations that can paint the picture of your mom!

So, what does the Hebrew word for mother define it as?

It is the Hebrew word “ame”, Strong’s number H517. It simply means: The bond of the family

You’ve heard the old various sayings about what is the bond of a situation.

  • Gerald Ford said that “truth is the glue that holds the government together.”
  • Eugene O’Neill said that “The grace of God is glue.”
  • Jada Pinkett Smith says, “I’m the glue that keeps it all together. I’m the nucleus of an entertainment family. My day-to-day is making decisions to keep life above water.”

So, what is the glue, this binding agent that gives mom’s special powers?

  • Is it like Super Glue, Gorilla Glue, Gorilla Tape?
  • Or is it some hidden thing we do not simply comprehend?

For one moment think about these two words.

The Mother of all living and the one the binds everything together.

If ever there was a description of Christ in this world, it is this description found in His Words.

“… I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10 ESV)

Jesus came to bring life and to give all the ability to live it more abundantly.

Is this not the same role of mothers?

So, love your mothers as you love Jesus, and He loves you back, even when you are unlovable.

Just like your mother!
