4 Ways to Give More Time To Yourself

We are often required to give of ourselves…

HourglassTo our work, families, and community at large. Some organizations have huge “give back” campaigns where employees and customers are encouraged to give back to the community they serve, and from whom they make a living.

It’s almost as if what we are being paid is not enough, we must give back one of our most precious commodities – time.

Time to help build, clean, and serve within the community.

Time is precious… The one thing I’ve learned later in life is that I wish I had more time to give, as well as more time for myself.

As a pastor I feel I have given much, and seldom expect anything in return. Except for the satisfaction of knowing I’ve made a difference. As a father, I now wish that I had taken more time with my kids during those formative years and just enjoyed being with them – but work, church and school always seemed to take the extra time. As a husband, well, let’s just say we’re both looking to retiring years where we can spend more of our precious time just hanging out.

There are many categories of life where you wished for those few extra moments of time to enjoy, or wherein to be more productive. “Just one more minute… hour… or even second!”

Let me share a few ways I believe you can add more time to your life.

  • Quit saying “Yes” to everything that is asked of you. Extra work, play or business opportunities – not everything has a payback that gives more than the time you spend doing the task.
  • Use the concept of managed tasks – organize your day in such a way that you do not repeat steps to return to some point that you passed a while back. I order my trip to town with the concept of doing the stops in order so I do not repeatedly backtrack.
  • Prepare in advance those things that consume time at the most inopportune moment. Something as simple as preparing clothes, lunch, and morning coffee takes a few minutes while you are shutting down your day, and has huge paybacks when you are jump starting your morning.
  • Quit thinking that everything you do has to be “perfect” and done a certain way every time. There are shortcuts. Do not be afraid of using them.

Take advantage of those moments as they unveil themselves to give back to yourself the one thing you wish for the most… Time.

And everything we do requires time of ourselves that we must expend for that task… Just read Solomon in Ecclesiastes 3:1-11 … In fact, this is such a powerful scripture it was turned into a song by Pete Seger and became a number one hit when I was 10 years old… 1965… Commonly called, “Turn, Turn, Turn”   ….

To everything, turn, turn, turn.

There is a season, turn, turn, turn.
And a time to every purpose under heaven.
A time to be born, a time to die.
A time to plant, a time to reap.
A time to kill, a time to heal.
A time to laugh, a time to weep.

To everything, turn, turn, turn.
There is a season, turn, turn, turn.
And a time to every purpose under heaven.
A time to build up, a time to break down.
A time to dance, a time to mourn.
A time to cast away stones.
A time to gather stones together.

To everything, turn, turn, turn.
There is a season, turn, turn, turn.
And a time to every purpose under heaven.
A time of love, a time of hate.
A time of war, a time of peace.
A time you may embrace.
A time to refrain from embracing.

To everything, turn, turn, turn.
There is a season, turn, turn, turn.
And a time to every purpose under heaven.
A time to gain, a time to lose.
A time to rend, a time to sew.
A time for love, a time for hate.
A time for peace, I swear it’s not too late.
