The Distractions of Martha

Has the weight of the world…

Mary and Martha…ever dangled over your head and messed with you mind so much that nothing seems to be “right” anymore?

I was thinking about the political upheaval we are facing these days. One side dealing with a socialist and seems to have the ear of the younger voter while dealing with the older established politician. The other side dealing with big business wannabe while struggling with “first timers” who think they have the answer for everyone.

You can easily become distracted because it seems that’s all there is to talk about. Talking heads. Taking sides. Focusing on the battle brewing.

Perhaps it was the same with Martha. Jesus had come to her house and she immediately gets into her service mode to take care of all his needs. Only, her sister has chosen to simply sit at his feet listening to his teaching. Martha begins to fret, and as you can imagine, she begins to think the worse and stresses over her own job, must less the supposed job of her sister.

She agonizes. Finally she speaks up. “Tell Mary to help me!”

But the response of the Lord may not necessarily take the load off her plate, but within his words he speaks truth to her.

But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42 ESV)

One thing is necessary. Over all your anxiety and troubled state. You are missing the most important thing. Jesus is in the house.

Perhaps that’s the problem many of us face. Anxieties. Troubled minds. Overworked hands. And we simply forget that Jesus is here…

Jesus is here right now… Reach out and touch him.
Jesus is here right now… Help you’ll receive.
Jesus is standing near, ready your heart to cheer!
Jesus is here right now… Only believe.
